When the news of a Captain Marvel movie first made waves online, the name “Brie Larson” was not necessarily on the radar. Quite a few other A-list actresses made the cut of consideration within the rumor mill, but it was a big surprise for a lot of MCU fans and critics when the Oscar-winning actress was officially named as the woman who would play Carol Danvers and her heroic alter-ego Captain Marvel.
From her performances in such movies as Room (for which she won the Oscar) and Glass Castle, it was clear that Brie Larson had the acting chops to pull off the role. When the teaser trailer for the movie was finally released online earlier this week, it became clear that Marvel may have made the perfect casting decision when they brought Larson onboard. However, her slender frame that has worked well for her in previous roles raised concerns about whether she would be able to look the part of a superhero. In the months that followed the big announcement, Brie clearly worked just as hard (if not harder) behind the scenes to prepare her mind and body to officially join the MCU as a leading heroine.
An interesting point is that content creators and marketers can learn a lot from Brie Larson’s superhero workout. Sure, it can help you to get into shape physically. More importantly, though, her workout strategy to prepare for Captain Marvel can help you to get your content into shape. How so?
Identify the Weak Areas and Make Them a Priority
When Brie Larson first started working with a physical trainer to prepare for Captain Marvel, the objective was to target building her frame by building her muscles. Multiple reports claim that the focus was on strengthening each body part with a special emphasis on the weakest areas of the typical female body – the upper back, arms and shoulders. Those who followed Brie Larson’s physical transformation (which she documented with periodic posts and video clips via social media) know that she hit those areas of her body hard. There was even a viral video clip that showed her back as she did several pull-ups in the gym – a milestone that she had never been able to achieve before.
What is the lesson for content marketers and creators? You must hit the weak areas first, fast and fiercely. Whether you create content or promote it, your strategy may have several weak areas that need your undivided attention. As you work to strengthen the other aspects of your content strategy, you must keep those weaker areas at the top of your list. Doing so will allow you to take one heroic leap towards achieving the ideal transformation of your quality content that you desire.
Strive to Do What Others Don’t
As the old saying goes, you must do what others don’t to get live the life that others won’t.
In addition to pull-ups, Brie Larson had to commit to various exercises with heavy weights and other fitness tools and equipment. One of her trainers even said that Brie had to step out of her comfort zone with some of the routines by doing exercises that were not “even in her thought process.” Superhero movie fans and critics may remember that actor Henry Cavill felt the same way when he trained to take on the role of Superman for the first time in Man of Steel – pushing his mind and body beyond the limits to achieve goals he did not think were even possible.
When it comes to developing and marketing your content, you should maintain the same approach. It is easy to take the “safe route” and remain within your comfort zone – especially if it seems to have worked for you in the past. However, just because it may have worked in the past does not mean it will work in the future. Coloring outside the lines of your comfort zone can push your content development and marketing skills to new heights and further assist you to transform yourself, your content and your overall online presence as a result.
Focus on Form Over Finesse
To help her build muscle and get her legs in the perfect shape for her tight-fitting costume, Brie successfully underwent a jump training/plyometrics program that allowed her to also burn more fat along the way. For instance, she eventually worked up to 3’ box jumps. Even though a 3-foot box jump may seem relatively insignificant compared to the higher jumps of other athletes, her trainers wanted her to focus on form more than finesse. Maintaining proper form plays an integral role in the success of jump training. Even at shorter heights, proper form will help you reap the benefits while strengthening your legs and enhancing your jumping ability.
Form is just as important when creating and marketing your content as well. It is easy to take shortcuts and assume that you will achieve the desired results in a fraction of the time by doing so. However, just like in the gym when it comes to physical fitness, taking unauthorized shortcuts can lead to serious injury and damage your online presence. Taking the time to study proper form and pacing yourself will allow you to experience the lasting, long-term growth and benefits that unsafe shortcuts could never provide.
Create Marvel-ous Content
Brie Larson as Captain Marvel is going to turn heads and make waves. When you think of the current condition of the MCU storyline during the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War, there is a lot of speculation surrounding Captain Marvel and how she will help to restore balance. There is also a lot of speculation surrounding your online presence and content within your target audience. Fortunately, they do not have to wait until next year to find out what happens.
Identify your weak areas and make them a priority to strengthen your content development and marketing strategies. Strive to do what others do not do even if it breaks down the walls of your comfort zone. You may not go viral overnight, but it is those who focus on form over finesse that will still be posting quality content years from now.
Brie Larson may be playing Captain Marvel on the big-screen, but you can still create marvel-ous content behind the scenes – steering the boat of your online presence as the Captain of your own story.
