How Long Should It Really Take to Write an Average Blog Post?

Updated: Jan 28, 2021

You probably know how content is important in building relationships, establishing brands, providing value for readers, SEO, and so on. You may be thinking of creating valuable 2020 content for your blog, but the thought of spending hours writing may be pushing you back. Or perhaps, you’re just curious about how fast it takes other writers to write their blog posts.

Well, the time you spend writing a blog will depend on several factors. Let’s look at the 3 major ones:

The Length of the Blog Post

The average length of a blog post is approximately 1600 words which takes about 7 minutes to read. Compared to previous years, bloggers are now writing longer posts of 1000 words or more. This is because search engines favor long-form content as they’re comprehensive enough to satisfy the readers’ needs. Google, for instance, wants content that is generally:

  1. Reliable

  2. Substantial

  3. Well-researched

  4. Has a purpose and achieves it

  5. Benefits the readers

  6. Professionally written (no grammatical errors)

However, long-form content doesn’t necessarily guarantee quality. Content can be as long as it needs to be, provided it authentically delivers the intended purpose. Sometimes you may need less than 300 words to pass the message across, whereas other times, you may require 2000 words or more. It all depends on the specific topics, target audience, and the purpose of the post. Remember, when it comes to content, it’s all about quality first – word counts just support it. So, if you’re going to write long posts, you would need more time to research, write, and edit your work.

Type of Content

Content such as checklists are quite straight forward and may not require a lot of time. However, other types of content such as infographics, interviews, and industry news may require a lot of research and fact-checking, and this translates to more time.

Your Writing Experience

Generally, experienced bloggers take less time to write blogs compared to newbies. With many years of writing:

  1. You get to be more familiar with your niche

  2. You research faster

  3. You type faster

  4. Your writing has little edits

According to research conducted on 4,000 marketers, most of them spent between 1-2 hours to complete a 500-word blog post. That would be about 2-4 hours to complete a 1000 word blog post. But as seen above, many factors are involved here.

Content Creation in 2020: How Long Will It Take You to Write Blog Post?

As long as you write quality blog posts that bring a positive impact on your audience, you are free to take as much time as you need to complete writing them.

However, improving your writing speed will save you a couple of hours that you can use to do other important things. One of the best ways to learn how to write a blog quickly is writing daily – practice makes perfect!
