Boost Your Social Media Traffic In All The Other Places
If you ask any budding artist or singer, the one thing they’d like to have, even for a moment in their careers is to become famous! Let’s face it, if you’re popular, you’re in! And it’s not just about making money, either! It’s all about selling something – yourself as an actor, or a song if you’re a singer.
Same goes for startup companies or business. Those of you who don’t want to be tied down by a 9 to 5 job or be under a boss you don’t know, would love to own a business and become a booming success. Success can be equated to popularity. So what business wouldn’t want to be popular?
But it’s not the same as in the 60’s when you sold something by the millions then you became popular. Today, it’s the opposite – you first have to be popular then you start selling.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” max_width=”620px” text_font=”Montserrat||||” text_font_size=”20″ text_text_color=”#363636″ use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” custom_margin=”30px||0px|” text_line_height=”1.5em” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|tablet”]
So how do you become popular?
Ask your school guidance counsellors, and they’ll tell you – Be Yourself. Ask for content marketing strategies and they’ll tell you – Go on Social Media!
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram? There’s probably at least one person in the world that’s on a certain social media platform. So if you’re a startup, which one do you choose where you can have 1.) The most exposure for you budget 2.) Invite and acquire customers 3.) Have a healthy engagement with your subscribers and 4.) Keep a loyal following.
It’s easy to get tempted to jump right in with the big players. It’s where everyone hangs out. The “in” crowd is always “on.” And they don’t seem to be losing any followers. Yes, let’s join the industry giants to get the biggest exposure. But wait! There must be other platforms that may be “less travelled” a.k.a. less popular but still can be trudged on for traffic, leads, engagement and eventually revenue.

Let’s look at some of these platforms and as content marketing help, discover for yourselves why your startup could use a little bit more exposure that’s far from the madding crowd, so to speak.
StumbleUpon
Perfect for startups, it’s literally a discovery platform that recommends content for StumbleUpon users.
Its more than 30 million users pales in comparison to the others but it’s a place where people go for entertainment and information. It has a Paid Discovery platform to promote businesses who sell stuff. And publishers, marketers and brands have used it to their advantage.
When a user “stumbles” or hits Like on a particular page, that page is put on a certain lineup, like a queue. As other users click the Stumble button, searching for other content that they choose, the next pages on queue will be displayed.
This is a great way for you to get discovered through a random act. So how can you exploit this to get traffic?
As one of those great content marketing strategies tell you, go back to the basics and create great quality content. Watch out! There is a dislike button – something that Facebook will never be a part of. But no need to worry. A dislike click won’t mean you have poor quality content. It just means, the user just wants to see less of your kind of content. It’s still painful but not as painful as a total dislike.
To get started with StumbleUpon, follow these steps:
Sign up for a new account by clicking Start Exploring.
Choose 5 topics of interest to you then save your interests.
Start exploring!
You can add a favorite webpage to StumbleUpon that others might like and hope people will stumble upon. So start exploring now.
Google+
For a while we thought Google+ was going to disappear but they’ve revamped it and now has many wonderful changes. You should open your “idle” account and see for yourself.
It now has two fundamental items: Communities and Collections.
Communities is a fancy copycat of the Facebook Groups where members can post just about anything and just about any form of media while at the same time chatting with other members.
Look for communities with a huge number of members and see if your content can fit there to be seen and read.
Collections is a new way to group or “collect” your posts by topic. Like Pinterest that has an endless amount of posts of the same topic, Google+ Collections works similarly.
If you didn’t get into the Google+ hype when you got your Google Mail account, here’s how you can get your Google+ account:
Login to your Google account (or Gmail) and click your pic to see the Google+ Profile link.
You can edit your profile and then start creating a collection.
Start sharing great quality content that many people will find useful.
Start looking for communities you can be a part of.
Stack Exchange
There are many Q&A sites out there: Yahoo Answers, Answers.com and Quora (being the most popular). But there’s one that’s gaining popularity with its ever growing number of communities. But how do you distinguish between Quora and Stack Exchange?
To put it succinctly, Quora may be described as a lecturer answering questions. Stack Exchange is the detailed instructional manual with valuable examples.
What makes it different is that it is goal-oriented, is problem-solving, and has communities. Its main goal is to inform (like an encyclopedia), and so people rely on it because they know they will get an answer that’s accurate. This is their hook and a good content marketing help.
It’s simple: Ask a question, get answers! Users answer questions well enough to earn them a reputation or an Upvote (similar to Reddit).
To start with Stack Exchange:
Create a free account and look for communities that may find your expertise a big help.
Start answering questions. But choose those that relate to your blog/brand/expertise and then you may give a link to your site for people to get further information.
Once people notice your “expertise” you will be reputed as an authority to give you more traffic.
Medium
Probably our favorite “small player” for now, Medium is a platform for users to provide valuable information through the content they share.
According to Wikipedia, Medium is a online publishing platform. We can just simply call it a channel. Or just a place where you can find worthwhile articles. These articles are classified into collections of publications that are related to each other.
Getting started with Medium:
Create a free account
Create an idea for your story or content with their text editor. Something that’s eye-catching and attention grabbing. Hint: controversial works best.
Think about a killer headline.
Share it by clicking the publish button. And share it on your other social media sites.
Conclusion
Use one, or use all! But still use the big players. It won’t hurt to utilize just a little bit more of those platforms that we think are gaining ground. Be on the bandwagon while it’s still early.
Popularity may not be our main goal, but it’s a great bonus to have! It won’t be an overnight sensation as those things come by so rarely. This takes a little bit more time and patience. Not every business will get it but when they do, it will be a great feeling!
