According to Terry Pratchett, one of the most famous English authors of fantasy novels, “There is no such thing as writer’s block. That was created by people in California who couldn’t write.”
I won’t dismiss writer’s block completely. But I do agree with Pratchett that it might be an excuse writers sometimes use to procrastinate. But there are reasons behind that procrastination, and it is those very reasons that we need to tackle to get back into our groove.
As a writer, I too go through bouts of writer’s block. In fact, I have two incomplete manuscripts just sitting on my desktop, staring at me every day, provoking me to write … and yet… I don’t. I use all sorts of excuses to convince myself that it’s not that I don’t want to complete them. I just don’t have the time. That’s really not true, and I know it.
So, here are a few tips writers can use to overcome writer’s block. I intend to give them a try, why don’t you?

So, here are a few tips writers can use to overcome writer’s block. I intend to give them a try, why don’t you?
Eliminate distractions: For a writer, their computer is basically their primary workstation. If we were still using electronic typewriters, the story would be quite different. But when you’re working on a computer that is connected to the Internet, there are so many distractions. The urge to check your Facebook page, the desire to watch a comedy show on YouTube or simply reading an online newspaper are all harmless activities per se, but when you do them during your writing time, they can end up being major distractions. These distractions help promote writer’s block. So, if you want to finish off that article you started to write this morning, do yourself a favor and close the YouTube tab. Eliminating these distractions can work wonders eliminating writer’s block.
Start fresh and start early: People have this image of freelance writers and authors – that they wake up every morning, make a cup of coffee and then switch on their computers with disheveled hair and bunny pajamas. That’s really not who we are. We take our writing seriously and though, there may be days when we do work in our pajamas, we are still doing some serious work. Seriously 😉 One of the most effective ways to overcome writer’s block is to start your day early when your mind is fresh and vibrant. If you can manage and if the weather allows it, write with a view of the lake/beach. Enjoy your cup of coffee with fresh, early morning breeze. Nothing can trigger of a few thousand words better than an early morning start.
Utilize your sleep: I don’t know about you guys, but the best ideas come to me while I’m sleeping. I would either dream them (no, I’m not kidding) or I would wake up in the middle of the night, and my mind would be whirring with ideas – ideas sufficient enough to write a chapter or two (of those unfinished manuscripts). I feel that writers rarely sleep. They might be going through the motions, but even when they are sleeping, they can be productive. You just need to know when it’s happening.
Take a walk: Another very effective way to overcome writer’s block is to go for a walk. It always works for me. If I am stuck on a particular scene, or if I don’t know how I should link one chapter with another, I make myself a cup of tea, pour it in my favorite mug, and go for a walk. A long, very long, walk. You won’t believe how a change of scenery and some physical activity can do to your writer’s block. Try it out. You won’t be disappointed.
The fact is that writer’s block is more of a myth and less of a reality. It’s not really our writing ability that is blocked. It’s just that our mind needs some change to kick off the creative juices. The best way to do that is to get off the computer and do something else that you love. Then go back to completing that article, novel or blog.
